I'm really going to have to put a book gadget on this blog. When I got to the part of the profile where it asks about favorite books? Phhhhht! I'd need pages.
Anyway, yesterday before I took the car and camera and pillows out to the lake for the afternoon, I stopped to pick up the book they saved for me at our wonderful library. "The Help", a book I have managed to get to BEFORE it's out in paperback. I buy books, but have always tried to avoid buying them hot off the presses, and I've always been a regular at the library.
When I was a kid, I thought it'd be really cool to be a librarian because they got to use those little date stamping thingys on the Date Due paper in the back of the book. My dad wisely pointed out that I could buy my own date stamp and ink pad and not have to wait to get a college education to stamp stuff. How liberating!
My goal each year is a hundred books, but I usually make it to about 85. So far this year I'm at 60. I'm half through the book I picked up yesterday---which is a "14 day book" still. I've patiently waited for my turn, and in the meantime read two of the Steig Larsson books, and four others from the library.
Which actually leads me to another rant. When I have read a whole series of books with recurring characters whose looks are described often, I tend to picture them as looking that way. Why, when they make a movie of the book do they cast someone who looks so different? My specific gripe was with the casting of the Linley series by Elizabeth George. I'm pretty sure Inspector Linley is blond in the books. They couldn't find a handsome blond actor????? In England??? Awww, come on!
We've been wondering how hard it would be to cast the heroine in the Larsson books, who's a tiny, scrawny, tattooed, pierced girl. I saw a picture on the Netflix ad and she's pierced all right. I guess it can't be too hard to get that part right.
BTW, you Kindle owners, do you like them?
I read all the time too, but have never once THOUGHT of doing an annual tally!

ReplyDeleteI have always wanted to have a whole little stack of library cards and stamps :) but mostly I wanted to tuck those cards into the little pocket in back. I was a summer library helper when I was in elementary school. I loved it.
ReplyDeleteSpeaking of love - I love my Kindle. The only downside I can find is that I can't read books that have any pictures in it - so crafty type books are out or Ann Rule true crime books (because she has a whole section of photos in the middle of the book) because the photos aren't terribly clear on a Kindle. But, that's OK. I can have a whole pile of books with me that weighs only 10oz. :)
